What is life coaching – and
do you actually need it?
An honest look at what life coaching is, what it isn’t, and how to know if it would genuinely help you.
What is life coaching?
Who is it for?
Life coaching is a structured process for getting clear on where you are, where you want to go, and what’s currently standing between the two. It’s future-focused and action-oriented, different from therapy, which typically explores the past.
A good life coach asks honest questions, creates thinking space you don’t have elsewhere, and holds you accountable to what actually matters to you. A bad one offers motivation and platitudes. The difference is significant.
WHO THIS IS FOR
People who are functioning well, often by most external measures but who sense that something important is missing, misaligned, or quietly unsustainable.
Often this is successful people who have achieved what they set out to achieve and found it didn’t land the way they expected. Life coaching works best when you’re ready for honest self-examination.
Real experience.
Not theory from the outside.
With Steve, life coaching is practical, direct, and structured around you specifically. Sessions focus on real decisions, real pressure points, and real next steps not generic frameworks. Steve’s background building a £20m business means the work stays grounded in commercial reality. You won’t get motivational language or abstract theory.
“I don’t trade in motivation or easy answers. I work with people who are already capable, already successful and ready to stop pretending the quiet discomfort they feel isn’t worth paying attention to.”

Frequently asked questions.
What’s the difference between a life coach and a therapist?
Therapy typically explores the past to understand the present. Life coaching focuses on the present and future, where you are now and where you want to go. If you’re dealing with clinical mental health issues, a therapist is the right first call. Coaching is appropriate for people who are functioning well but want a better framework.
Can life coaching help with burnout?
Yes, and it’s one of the most common reasons people come to Ascend. Burnout is usually a structural problem: ambition without boundaries, pace without direction. Coaching addresses the structure, not just the symptoms.
How long does life coaching take?
It varies depending on what you’re working on. Some people find real clarity in a few months. Others engage for a year or more as their situation develops. The Life Audit is the best starting point for understanding what’s needed.
Does life coaching really work?
Good life coaching with the right coach, applied honestly, produces measurable changes in clarity, direction, decision-making, and wellbeing. The evidence base for structured coaching is strong. The key variable is the quality of the coach and the commitment of the person being coached.
