ABOUT STEVE BENNETT · FOUNDER, ASCEND COACHING
I built the business.
Made the money.
And still lost the plot.
What happened next became the foundation of everything Ascend Coaching is.
1
The Build
I spent 20 years building a business. At its peak, we were turning over £20 million. I had the evidence of success the numbers, the team, the reputation. And I was running on empty in ways I didn’t have language for yet.
Ambition is a powerful fuel. The problem is it doesn’t tell you when the tank is running low. I believed that if I just worked harder, pushed further, achieved the next thing, the sense of unease would eventually pass. It didn’t. It accumulated.
The business was successful. I was not. I just hadn’t stopped long enough to notice.
2
The Fall
When I sold the business, I expected relief. What arrived instead was a period of real darkness, depression, a loss of identity, and the disorienting question of who you are when the thing that defined you for two decades is suddenly gone.
Nobody prepares you for that. Nobody talks about it. The assumption is that selling a business at that level is a straightforward success story. In reality, it’s one of the most destabilising experiences a person can go through, and the silence around it makes it worse.
I found myself questioning everything. Not just what to do next but who I was, what I actually valued, and whether any of it had been worth it.
3
The Rebuild
What pulled me through wasn’t motivation or positivity. It was structural work building an honest picture of where my life actually stood across every area that mattered, and then addressing each one deliberately.
That process is what I now guide every client through. It’s not theory. It’s what worked. And the reason I know it works is that I had to build it when nothing else did.
I don’t trade in motivation or easy answers. I work with people who are already capable, already successful and ready to stop pretending the quiet discomfort they feel isn’t worth paying attention to.
WHAT STEVE BELIEVES
The principles behind the coaching.
Ambition is not the problem
Drive isn’t what breaks people. The absence of structure around drive is. Ambition needs a framework direction, recovery, honest self-assessment or it eventually consumes the person powering it.
Honest assessment before action
You can’t build the right life from a blurred picture of where you actually are. The Life Audit exists because most people have never stopped to look clearly at all six areas at once.
Structure creates freedom
Clarity about direction doesn’t constrain you. It removes the paralysis of not knowing where to go. The people who build real freedom do so by creating structure, not by escaping it.
Sustainable over spectacular
The goal isn’t peak performance. It’s a life and business you can sustain without destroying everything else in the process. That’s a harder, more honest target and a more valuable one.
